Can Vitamin C reduce Oxidative Stress? Vitamin C has antioxidant properties, which means that it reacts with reactive oxygen species (ROS) to neutralize it. There are reports of Vitamin C being an ineffective antioxidant supplement. However, a mismatch of the supplement format compared to the source of Oxidative Stress may be the cause. Supplements come in three main formats, which provide the release of the compounds immediate, time, or sustained release.
The immediate release is usually a tablet format or chewable. This format provides a near instantaneous increase in the concentration of the compound in the blood. This assumes implied losses due to stomach digestion and absorption prior to entry into the blood stream.
With time-release, the format prevents rapid capsule digestion in the stomach with release in the small intestine. Time-release is not immediate, but it does avoid losses due to stomach digestion. Both immediate and time-release formats provide a short-term spike in compound concentration in the bloodstream.

A recent news article reported on the use of an intravenous (IV) cocktail including Vitamin C to treat patients with sepsis demands our attention. Blood Oxidative Stress or BLOS is blood cells generating high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which is the primary source of Oxidative Stress. In patients with sepsis, both BLOS and General Oxidative Stress (GOS) contribute to overall Oxidative Stress. According to the article, Vitamin C provided by IV is effective at neutralizing the ROS compounds and reducing Oxidative Stress. This could be good news for folks (without sepsis) interested in managing Oxidative Stress, which are more than 2/3 of adult Americans.
The reduction and management of BLOS is possible by either preventing the ROS induction of blood cells or neutralizing the ROS in the blood stream through the use of an antioxidant supplement. With BLOS, the activated blood cells keep producing ROS 24/7 (i.e., continuous). This suggests that a sustained-release supplement with Vitamin C (and other antioxidants) is the only effective format for an antioxidant supplement to reduce the impact of BLOS. Be careful and read those product labels.
Keep this in mind: Vitamin C used as an antioxidant supplement is different than meeting the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA). The RDA refers to what your body requires without Oxidative Stress.
